Linda Chew

Linda studied sculpture at Cheltenham College of Art where James Campbell, her inspirational teacher, encouraged her to experiment and form her ideas in clay. Then came an opportunity through potter William Newland to work with the sculptor Beth Blik, who encouraged her to gain an Art Teachers Certificate at The Institute of Education, London University. Whilst teaching in Winchester, she set up her studio making domestic ware, selling in galleries in London and throughout Britain.

Over the years her ideas have gradually changed to produce one off pieces which reflect her love of textiles and stitching. Growing up eating off blue and white Willow Pattern plates with a family who were always sewing and mending; a fascination for fabrics, texture and pattern; and working on her allotment have been constant inspirations for her work.

Pieces are constructed from soft slabs of porcelain with parts sometimes thrown on the wheel. Using a variety of resist techniques, textures are impressed and patterns are enhanced with oxides and underglaze colours. Stitches and lines are often drawn through underglaze colours.

All work is fired in an electric kiln to 1240 degrees centigrade.

Linda is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and has been working for over 45 years from her studio in Winchester, Hampshire, England.
